BARNET has met Government targets for immunising children with the MMR vaccine.

By April this year, 86 per cent of all five-year-olds had been given the vaccine and 81 per cent of all two-year-olds.

The vaccine immunises children against measles, mumps and German measles, three avoidable diseases that can have serious health implications.

Dr Andrew Burnett, medical director at Barnet Primary Care Trust, said: "The coverage figures for MMR vaccinations in Barnet are a joy to report and show that the hard work of healthcare staff, especially from GP practices, in encouraging parents to immunise their children is paying off.

"I am delighted that the majority of parents are now discounting the myths about MMR immunisation and are immunising their children to prevent these serious diseases in increasingly large numbers.”
