A LEADING breast cancer campaigner from Edgware attended a star-studded reception with Prime Minister Gordon Brown in Downing Street last Thursday.

Marina Raime, who started the Better Days Cancer Care charity in 2002, says she has enlisted Mr Brown's wife Sarah to support their work, which focuses on supporting women in the Afro-Carribean community.

Among celebrities at the event were model Twiggy, athlete Denis Lewis, singer Gerry Halliwell and TV presenter Lorraine Kelly.

Ms Raime, who was diagnosed with breast cancer aged 35, said: “It was really, really good. It's great so many celebrities and politicians turned out to support such a worthwhile cause.

“I had a chance to speak to Sarah Brown about our charity and she said she would be interested in supporting us, so I'm going to write to her. I also met Linford Christie and Vanessa Feltz asked me to be on her show.

“It has become a very political cause these days, and although I'm not political myself I know you have to involve them.”

The charity is hoping to open a new centre in Hendon next year, as part of a drive to improve the care women get.
