THE competition to find a good deed for the Times Series team to carry out is coming to a close.

Entries for the Mitzvah Day event must be with us by November 1, ahead of the scheduled activities on Sunday, November 15.

Thousands of people have already signed up to take part in good deeds across the country and the Times Series news team are readying themselves to lend a helping hand to a worthy cause in the community.

Events ranging from collectathons to clean-ups have been arranged by schools, multi-faith religious groups and youth centres across the area, but there is still time to put your project forward.

Any group, charity or organisation who needs a project completed by volunteers can submit their ideas, which will be judged by a panel including TV presenter Angus Deayton and Times Series group editor Rachel Sharp.

Whatever the task, it will be considered, and representatives from the paper will turn out on the day to carry out the deed - however dirty, crazy or caring it is.

This year's focus has been on promoting the multi-cultural nature of the day, and it has recently found support from a leading BBC children's show.

Blue Peter has teamed up with hundreds of Jewish children from a range of schools, synagogues and youth groups as part of their annual appeal.

The show's campaign, which has yet to be formally launched, will ask children and young people to collect old T-shirts and decorate them to be used as gowns, to save on the cost of corrective surgery for children in developing countries with cleft palates.

Reform Synagogue Youth, Liberal Judaism Youth and Noam, the Masorti youth wing, will be working together on the project at the Sternberg Centre in Finchley, along with other schools and organisations in the area.

Mitzvah day Founder and Director, Laura Marks, said: “For so many young people, Blue Peter is how they first become aware of the idea that charity can also be fun.

“It’s a wonderful way in which children and young people can really get into the spirit of Mitzvah Day.”
