MEMBERS of a Hendon based Jewish armed services charity marched through Whitehall on Sunday in remembrance of fallen comrades.

The Association of Jewish Ex-Service Men and Women (AJEX), which has its head offices in Harmony Way, held its annual ceremony and parade to the Cenotaph to remember those who have lost their lives through two world wars and more recent conflicts.

About 800 AJEX members took part in this year's march, which was marking its 75th anniversary, and has always been held one week after the national Remembrance Sunday.

Spokeswoman for AJEX, Aviva Ozin, said: “The parade is steeped in a strong tradition and is always keenly attended by Jewish serving personnel, AJEX members from up and down the country and ex-service representatives from around the world.”

But she added: “It may well be the final year this event takes place in this form. The nation and AJEX in particular, have become aware of the dwindling numbers of ex-serving members who are able to fully participate.”

The ceremony was conducted by Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, AJEX Chaplain the Rev.

Malcolm Weisman, Rabbi Harry Jacobi, and the newly appointed Chaplain of the Armed Forces, Rabbi Arnold Saunders.

Ex-servicemen and women were joined by families and the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Brian Coleman, along with hundreds of children from different youth groups, including the Jewish Lads and Girls Brigade and the band of the RAF.
