Although we all hope for a healthy and happy festive period, things don't always go to plan, and because doctors' surgeries and pharmacies tend to be closed over Christmas, it can be hard to know where to go for help in the event of a medical emergency.

Of course, in the event of a serious emergency, you should dial 999 as you would at any other time of year, but, if it is a more minor problem, a good place to start is with NHS Direct. This service offers a wealth of information about all sorts of medical problems either online at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk or on the phone by calling 0845 46 47 where you will be able to speak to a medically qualified person who will be able to offer you advice.

They will also be able to offer advice about emergency dental treatment.

It is a good idea to do a little forward planning to help you deal with any mishaps. Put together a basic first aid box, including plasters, painkillers such as aspirin or paracetamol, antiseptic cream, sterile dressings and bandages.

Seal it all in a box with a tightly fitting lid, keep it in a safe place (out of the reach of children) and with any luck , it will stay unopened throughout the festive period.

Make a note of your GP's out of hours' number, just in case, and make sure you have enough supplies of any medication that you take regularly. In the event that you do run out over Christmas, your local pharmacy may, under certain circumstances, be able to give you an emergency supply, but this shouldn't be relied upon.

Finally, for many people, Christmas can be a difficult time for all sorts of reasons. Stress, anxiety, bereavement, depression and mounting debts can all make this time of year particularly lonely and it can be hard to ask for help, especially if everyone else seems to be enjoying themselves.

Organisations such as The Samaritans are there to listen and will be happy to lend a compassionate ear this Christmas and make life a little easier.
