A FATHER of three is training to walk more than the distance of a marathon each day for two weeks between two UK capital cities in aid of an international children's charity.

Experienced fundraiser Berry Natalegawa, from Limesdale Gardens, Edgware, will walk the 420 miles from London to Edinburgh in a bid to raise £250,000 for UNICEF.

The 48-year-old is hoping to set off on his lone trek from the Indonesian Embassy, in central London, next month, and will be aiming to stay with friends and family along the way.

Berry, who has run 10ks and marathons in aid of charity before, said: “I wanted to do something in response to all the emergencies and appeals that have been happening around the world.

“It is a personal response to tackling the key issue of helping disadvantaged young people and thought they would be the right people to fund raise for.”

The building design consultant said his training has so far involved leaving the car at home as often as possible and walking everywhere, but admits he is going to have to up the distances before he heads off.

He also admits walking the distance on his own may be tougher than the actual exercise, and said: “I just hope I get some support along the way.

“Walking the distance is quite far but I think doing it on my own could be a challenge. It may be a lot more psychological and some areas are quite barren along the way, but it is all for a good cause and my heart is set on finishing.”

And although he has set himself the tough task of travelling 30 miles a day to complete the journey in two weeks, and a high donation target, he feels both are achievable.

He said: “Some people are surprised at the amount but I had to pick a figure and I know other people can raise millions. I would just be happy to raise any figure for the charity.

“I feel really strongly about where the money is going and I'm actually really looking forward to the walk.”
