IT is not unusual to find Sir Tom Jones taking to take to the stage at venues across the legendary Las Vegas music scene.

But what did come as a surprise to one aspiring singer from East Barnet was that she would be joining him for a two week tour.

Sophie Hiller, 20, of Capel Road, was Delilah-ted to learn that a youTube video of her singing Justin Bieber's chart hit Baby was spotted by the producer organising the music for the series of gigs.

Singer songwriter Sophie, who attended Queen Elizabeth Girls School and studied music at Woodhouse College, performed the song on piano and arranged the harmonies, before posting it online.

She was asked for an audition and told soon after that she had got the part as a backing singer to Sir Tom on his latest round of show dates.

Sophie, who has been singing since she was 11, said: “I was so excited, and I am just so grateful for the opportunity.

“I have been working on my solo stuff for a while, but to sing backing vocals with one of the biggest artists in the world, I'm gobsmacked.

“I've spent ages playing his songs over and over again to get to know them. I have always been a fan because my dad used to play me music from great artists like Tom Jones.”

Sophie's first gig with Sir Tom was the Red Cross charity ball, in Monte Carlo, for Prince Albert, and she will be hoping not to miss the green green grass of home too much having flown out to Vegas yesterday ahead of an intensive schedule of shows.

She said: “I thought I would be terrified at my first gig because the band has been together for years and the other signer had already done a gig, but I was just so excited.

“But it was such a massive gig, it just flew by.

“I'm not nervous yet about Vegas, I've been running on adrenaline.”

She has been working full time on her solo recording work but said everyone she knows is happy to hear the news of her big break.

And the part-time dance teacher is hoping to grab A Minute of Sir Tom's Time to get some advice on making a career in music.

She said: “Everybody is really excited because they all know his music, it spans across generations.

“My friends are excited and even my grandpa is telling everyone.

“Sir Tom is a lovely guy, he's so down to earth. I've been told that he will find time in Vegas to sit me down and have a chat about my career.”

Sophie's proud parents are flying out to Vegas to see her take to the stage, and her father Lawrence said his daughter has dedicated herself to her singing.

He said: “She really had to go and prove herself which she did. We have always been aware of her talent, but there are millions of dads out there who think the same of their kids.

“As a parent it will be a great buzz to see her out there in Vegas. It is the climax of a whole lot of work she has put in and we are very excited.”
