TONIGHT is the night to catch a glimpse of bright flashes and streaks of light in the sky, according to the UCL Astronomical Observatory in Mill Hill.

Mike Pearson, who works as a technician and engineer at the centre in Watford Way, will be among many enthusaists watching for bright flashes and short streaks of light across the night sky, caused by the Perseid meteor shower.

The annual phenomenon, caused by debris from the Swift-Tuttle comet, can usually be seen from July to the end of August, but tonight is thought to be when the shower will peak.

Of course a clear sky is best for viewing the shower, but Mr Pearson also suggests going to darkened areas such as a park or somewhere not affected by light pollution.
