I was totally dismayed to read that libraries and allotments, these wonderful amenities that are so valued by the Barnet community charge payer, are potentially under threat (‘Council considers selling libraries and allotments’, Times Series, September 2).

It seems Barnet Council is planning to raid the family silver while the borough is still alive and kicking. Why isn’t the council more concerned with stopping the hemorrhaging of council tax through housing benefit to wealthy private landlords? Libraries are a drop in the ocean in comparison.
