A FRIENDS group has launched a petition to support Church Farmhouse Museum in Hendon which could face closure if plans to cut funding go ahead.

Friends of Church Farmhouse Museum launched an online petition yesterday against Barnet Council’s proposed plans to withdraw funding from the museum in Greyhound Hill.

A member of the group, Elizabeth Lawrence said: “The museum is a valuable asset to the borough and provides cultural and intellectual stimulation for adults and children.

“It’s appalling the council would do this in a day and age when education is so important.

“The museum draws people from far and wide and it’s important it is preserved for the next generation.”

Church Farmhouse is celebrating its 350th anniversary this year and as well as being a grade two starred listed building it is the oldest dwelling house in the borough.

Chairman of the group, David Bicknell said: “We have a donations box and the friends group provide some funding for special projects, but it’s nothing like what we get from the council.

“It has been in the council’s possession for 55 years and has been a real asset to the borough ever since – it would be a tragedy if it is lost.”

Cabinet’s figures show the museum has around 8,000 visitors per year and costs the council £126,000 per annum.

Councillor Robert Rams, cabinet member for customer access and partnerships, said: “It’s important to remember these are still proposals at this stage and we’ll be consulting on them alongside all our other budget proposals.

“We’ll welcome alternative ideas, proposals and comments on the future of the buildings and their exhibits.”
