OFFICE workers were fearful a car which caught fire in a busy Mill Hill street this afternoon was going to blow up.

One man was taken to hospital after the grey Mercedes C200 caught alight in Watford Way at about 12.30pm.

The road was closed for several minutes while firefighters tackled the flames, which completely destroyed the car.

Chris Webber, who works at Visa World, said he saw the car on fire outside his shop window.

He said: “The car was engulfed in flames. It was a really big ball of flames. I just glanced out and saw how bad it was and thought this will blow up so I got away from the window.

“An ambulance took somebody away but I think they got out of the car in time."

The road was reopened before 1pm.
