CAMPAIGNERS claim the decision to halt a waste plant project will cause major problems for plans for a new town in Brent Cross.

Developers want to build 7,500 new homes in the area, in what is known as the Brent Cross Cricklewood development, and got the thumbs up in principle from Barnet Council in 2009.

But the first phase of the project would include building flats on the site of a waste transfer station in Tilling Road, off the North Circular.

Members of the Coalition for a Sustainable Brent Cross Cricklewood Development say demolition of the site depends on plans by the North London Waste Authority, which include a waste plant at Pinkham Way but have been put on hold.

They will not now be put to the vote at Haringey Council until they can be reviewed by a planning inspector, in April next year at the earliest.

David Howard, a member of the coalition and chair of the Federation of Residents Associations of Barnet, said: “What it means for the community is more uncertainty. Will we lose our homes?

“What will happen to our community? Should our shops and businesses invest?”
