Hairdressing apprentices hosted a catwalk on Monday, to show off their creative designs as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

After the show, students were awarded a certificate for the skills they have learnt at Barnet and Southgate College, in Grahame Park Way.

Trainee Charlotte Horsey said: "The best thing about being a hairdressing apprentice is having the chance to do things on your own.

“You can try things out in the salon - you're not just in college learning. I spend one day a week in college and the rest of the time I’m in the salon.

"You've got your own time to try things out as well as gaining a qualification. I really enjoy it and one day I hope to own my own hairdressing business."

The college offers a variety of apprenticeships in different sectors, including catering, business administration and human resources.

Principal Marilyn Hawkins said: “Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to channel their future careers; they earn a wage while they learn on the job and, at the same time, they gain a nationally recognised qualification.

“The scheme is also of huge benefit to employers, as it’s an ideal opportunity for them to bring productive, enthusiastic and loyal people into their organisation, and at the same time demonstrates their commitment to investing into their own industry.”
