The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has approved a planning application for a Jewish free school to open in Mill Hill.

Mr Johnson has agreed to the plans for Etz Chaim Primary School to take over the former Wyevale Garden Centre site in Daws Lane.

Etz Chaim will increase in class size annually and have a final capacity of 222 pupils. The one-form entry primary school will offer 50 per cent of its places to Jewish children, with the rest being allocated regardless of a child's faith.

An initial application was passed last July, but new plans had to be submitted after campaigners sought legal action, claiming Barnet Council failed to properly consider the needs of the disabled and elderly under the Equalities Act 2010.

The second proposal was given the go-ahead by the council's Planning and Environment Committee in January.
