Conservative GLA candidate Brian Coleman has been accused of being “undemocratic” by refusing to take part in public hustings in the run-up to the election.

The incumbent Barnet and Camden representative on the GLA declined invitations to three scheduled debates with his rival candidates this month, reportedly stating it is “not his policy to do so”.

Labour candidate Andrew Dismore described Mr Coleman’s position as arrogant and said it was up to the electorate to quiz the politician on his time in office.

Former Hendon MP Mr Dismore said: “It shows his utter arrogance and refusal to be accountable to the public. Any normal politician would stand and answer questions on their record.

“One can only assume he is embarrassed of his record and frightened of debate. It shows he doesn’t give a monkeys about what people think.”

Pauline McKinnell, co-chairman of the Cricklewood Community Forum, invited Cllr Coleman to her group’s event next week.

The Barnet Council cabinet member replied but stated that he does not attend hustings – a decision that left Ms McKinnell disappointed.

She said: “We’re putting this on because I think people should be able to meet the candidates and ask questions so it is disappointing when they’re not willing to participate.

“I think these people have a duty to attend these things. They put themselves up for election and it is more democratic when they answer questions.”

A spokesperson for Cllr Coleman, who is also a cabinet member on Barnet Council and chairman of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, has not yet been available for comment.

Public hustings events featuring GLA candidates are due to take place this month at the following locations:

- Age UK, Meritage Centre, Church End, Hendon on Thursday, April 12, at 1.30pm.

- Cricklewood Community Forum, Crown Moran Hotel, 142-152 Cricklewood Broadway on April 17 between 8pm and 9.30pm.

- Hampstead Garden Suburb Residents Association, Free Church Hall, Northway on April 19 at 8pm.
