A young cancer survivor took part in the Hampstead Heath Race for Life on Saturday to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Ellie Cohen, 20, from Finchley was diagnosed with a rare cell tumour of the ovary, called dysgerminoma, when she was just six months into her studies at Nottingham University.

She said: “I broke down. It hit me like a tonne of bricks.”

However, after chemotherapy and surgery, Ellie is back on track with her engineering studies.

She is now determined to raise awareness about cancer and to help others fighting the disease so she took part in the 5K race and has raised more than £300 to date.

Ms Cohen said: “It was just lovely doing the race. It was a lot of fun and we were very lucky with the weather. It was perfect running weather.”

During the event Ms Cohen also gave a talk to other competitors.

She spoke about her experience with cancer, about her diagnosis and treatment, and about how important the Race for Life is.

She said: “Without Cancer Research UK, I wouldn’t be here today. I hope my story will help other young people like me be more conscious of their health.

“Maybe someone will visit the doctor sooner rather than later to find out what is wrong. That sort of awareness could save your life.”
