Sportsmen, journalists and politicians turned out to pay their respects to former Times Series editor Dennis Signy, whose funeral was held this morning.

The former Football Writers’ Association (FWA) chairman passed away at his home following an illness on the morning of June 6 aged 85.

Former Spurs managers David Pleat and Peter Shreeves were among the guests in the south chapel of Hendon Crematorium.

The funeral of the lifelong West Ham fan ended with the Hammers song I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles.

Barnet FC chairman Tony Kleanthous and assistant manager Giuliano Grazioli also attended as did a number of Fleet Street sports journalists and Mayor or Barnet, Councillor Brian Schama.

Tributes were paid by Mr Signy's son Richard, former FWA chairman Alex Montgomery and lifelong friend and author Norman Giller.

Mr Signy penned a number of football books and wrote for several national newspapers.

During his time as editor of the Times Series he was awarded an OBE for his charity and community work.

His association with football also led him to take on the role of general manager at Brentford Football Club and later the chief executive post at Queens Park Rangers.

He also worked as a PR consultant for Barnet Football Club later in his career.
