A new conservation area has been created in Potters Bar to protect historic buildings.

On Tuesday the Darkes Lane (west) area of Potters Bar, including The Avenue, Heath Drive, Manor Way and Mountway, became a conservation area.

The introduction of the conservation area means that there will be restrictions upon developments and people will have to have written permission for any proposed work on trees.

Cllr Cohen said: “I hope residents and local groups welcome this move as an excellent opportunity to preserve and enhance an important piece of Potters Bar history for future generations.

“Fewer than three per cent of buildings standing in Potters Bar date back to pre-1914, which makes the Darkes (west) area of town even more special and contributes to its historic interest.

“There are now tighter controls over these areas because of this move, for example certain types of extensions to properties or the installation of satellite dishes will now need planning permission, but we hope residents understand and appreciate why these steps have been taken.”
