Barnet's School Olympic Torch journey has come to an end.

The beacon, made by Middlesex University, has been passed between 11 Barnet primary schools this week.

At 12pm on Friday, children set off from Blessed Dominic Catholic Primary School, in Lanacre Avenue, for the final leg of the torch’s journey.

Groups of children from different classes took turns carrying the emblem in a relay race. They arrived at its final destination at Hyde School, in Hyde Crescent, at 1pm.

Children from all year groups lined the playground and cheered as the torch-bearers arrived. They all entered into the Olympic spirit by wearing hats and waving torches that they had made.

Kenisha, 11, was one of the children selected to carry the torch. She said: “It was very nice to be involved with all the different schools. It’s created new friendships for us.”

Budding footballer Kevin, also 11, said that carrying the torch had been “a lot of fun.”

Layla Hall from the Barnet Partnership for School Sports has been involved with the events this week.

She said: “The Olympics has inspired all the kids in Barnet to take up all sorts of different sports, including some sports they wouldn’t necessarily have known about.

“But this week’s been about more than just sport. It’s all been about bringing the schools together, sharing and working together.”

The torch’s arrival was witnessed by the Mayor and Mayoress of Barnet, Councillor Brian Schama and Mrs Lynda Schama.

Cllr Schama commented on the children’s enthusiasm throughout the day. He said: “It’s great to get the children excited about all sorts of different sports.

“I hope this has allowed the children to understand a bit more about the Olympics, so they can gain a lot more from the games when they come to London this summer.”

The official Barnet torch-bearer Kim Henderson also took part.

She told the Times Series: “All the children have been really enthusiastic. It’s crucial that Physical Education and sport are highly valued by our schools, and that all the children are given as many opportunities as possible to find a sport that works best for them.”

More celebratory sporting activities were planned throughout the day, including a boccia tournament run by members of Tottenham Hotspurs Football Club.
