Whether you’re seeking to follow an academic or vocational route, progress to higher education, enhance your job prospects or you just want to get back into education, Barnet and Southgate College will have a full or part-time course to suit your needs. With four campuses across north London, the college prides itself on offering smaller class sizes and closer tutorial support than many schools and universities.
Students enrolling on a sports course at the college can study anything from coaching and fitness instruction to anatomy and physiology to sports leadership and nutrition. All sports students have free access to an industry standard college gym, based at the Southgate Campus and can attend subsidised visits to a variety of sport and leisure venues, in areas such as: skiing, golf, bowling, theme parks, professional sports clubs and other sporting facilities.
The college is renowned for its excellent working partnerships with sports institutions, all of which offer a great opportunity for students to experience the highest level of coaching with organisations such as the Tottenham Hotspur Football Foundation, Saracens Rugby, London Skolars and Lee Valley Athletics Centre, to name but a few. Teaching staff in the sports department are experienced and qualified in their field, and the college offers a broad range of full- and part-time courses, with unique sports work experience opportunities.
Here’s what two of the college’s sports students said of their experiences:
Dion Chapman: “I’m studying for an NVQ Level 2 in Sport, while also playing rugby for London Skolars. This was a follow on course from last year when I studied an NVQ Level 2 in Coaching. Eventually I hope to study Sports Science at Middlesex University, which Barnet and Southgate College already has Higher Education links with. I’ve studied here for the last four years and the atmosphere is great; all the tutors are always willing to help with any problems.
“I really enjoy the coaching part off my course and the banter we have in class sets a good atmosphere and really makes you want to work. I’ve just got a place in the coveted England Students’ Rugby team, which is really exciting, so who knows where my rugby career will progress to, but one day I’d like to be a rugby coach or a personal trainer.“
Chloe Chaldecott: “I’m currently studying for a Sports Level 3 Diploma at the Southgate campus of the College. I applied for the course as I was interested in athletics and I hope to become an athletics coach.
“I love college life as you get to meet other people that are interested in what you are studying and you get to choose what course you want to progress onto; it’s much more practical than school. There’s always something within the course that interests me, including the theory and practical elements of the sport.
“The teaching is great as staff make sure you’re up to date with the work that has been set and they don’t let you fall behind, they really help motivate us. In the next five years I would hope to see myself coaching people with disabilities within athletics and my dream job is to welcome people to sports and athletics, so I’d love to become a full time coach.”
