Tributes have been paid to former Mayor of Barnet, Dot Benson, who has died following a long illness.

Mrs Benson, 88, died on Saturday, July 28. She was mayor from 1989 to 1990 and was Conservative group ward councillor for Hale Ward from 1978 to 1990.

Barnet’s current mayor, Councillor Brian Schama, said: “Dot contributed a huge amount during her time at the council, which was reflected through her positions on the education and public works committee as well as her time as mayor.

“Our thoughts are with her husband, Ron, children Nick and John and her four grandsons during this difficult time.”

Mrs Benson was particularly interested in the welfare and education of children and young people in the borough.

Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 7 August at Garston Crematorium in Watford at 10.40am.

Family members have requested no flowers but have suggested donations are made to Mind in Barnet which was the mayor’s chosen charity during her mayoral year.
