Man who secretly filmed Barnet Council binmen disposing of industrial waste in Mill Hill speaks out

The Mill Hill man who secretly filmed council binmen disposing of industrial waste has spoken of his desire to “turn the tables” on the council.

The Page Road resident, who wants to remain anonymous, filmed the Barnet binmen on July 23 and posted the video on YouTube on July 29.

The footage, which he shot from inside his home, shows three binmen allowing two other men to throw everything from mattresses to chunks of wood into their rubbish truck.

The cameraman said: “I only went out to look because the binmen do not normally come on a Monday.

“At first I thought maybe they had missed that house by mistake but then I realised something else was going on.

“It is definitely not on. To think that the council is doing private collections is beyond me.”

He added: “I put it on YouTube because the council are always on about people flytipping so I thought it was time to turn the tables and show that their employees are doing this.

“It shows a big hypocrisy. The council needs to pay more attention to its own employees.”

In a statement Barnet Council said: “Having viewed the video we can confirm three members of the council’s refuse team have been identified and a full disciplinary investigation is being carried out.

"This is not what the council would expect from its staff and takes incidents of this kind extremely seriously.”

maybe this is a pre-arranged collection of bulky items which can be arranged (for a fee) through the council

i have disposed of mattresses and old sofas this way - and a regular rubbish van was used for my collections

i think that unwarranted assumptions may have been made here

The recyclable waste going straight into a landfill...despite the taxes per tonnage?

Is this the crime of the century? At least the rubbish is going to be disposed of, rather than littering our streets.

Hardly the crime of the century i agree , everyone knows council workers are the lowest paid front line staff barnet have , and from what i`ve heard no pay rise in the last 4 years . what do you expect !!!!

I am extremely concerned, when some rubbish fell out the back of the truck onto the floor, they picked it up . This apparantly is contravening health and safety laws because when that happens in my street the binmen wont pick it up because they may injure themselves by bending down incorrectly.
also was the correct procedures followed when moving the wheeled bins .
Was the rules regarding protective clothing also followed?
did the "bare chested" bin man have any sun protection on ? Was this yet another Health and safety contravenation?
I think the recorder of the film has opened a "BIN" full of inportant questions......the one about exactly what the binmen were actually doing there, was it legit or not is actually the least of it!

I totally agree with previous post about pre-arranged collection, filming muggers, etc!!!!
And health & safety..in our country..over the top and ridiculous!
I'm resident of Mill Hill and cant believe someone is complaining and filming about this kind of issue !!!
I would be extremely HAPPY that my neighbor is taking care of his surrounding than just leaving whole mess around!!
Generally those people are miserable and sad..they should complain about issues in our area what are appropriate.. like why we see too much building waste left on streets, why dog owners still don't collect dog poo in middle of walking streets(where we i live in mill hill...) and so on...
