“I didn’t take too much notice of the pitch the first time I played at Underhill. But when I came off I was tired. Then the slope was pointed out to me and I realised why.”

It’s safe to say Albert Adomah quickly adapted to his surroundings at Underhill.

He joined Barnet in January 2008 from non-league Harrrow Borough and quickly established a reputation as one of League Two’s most exciting players.

“I owe a lot to Barnet and it was a privilege to have played for the club,” said Adomah, who joined Bristol City in 2010 and has been linked with a move to the Premier League this season.

“I hadn’t played at an Academy or any professional club before I joined Barnet, so it was certainly an education for me.

“Barnet gave me my first professional contract and I spent two years and half years there. I really enjoyed it and learnt a lot from the people at the club.”

The 25-year-old played 120 matches for the Bees and scored 20 goals. The first of those came on his debut against Hereford.

“Scoring in your first game for a new club really helps you settle,” he said. “It was a good debut for me and from that point I didn’t look back and maintained my place in the team.”

Adomah has returned to Underhill to support the Bees and admits he makes sure to check the club’s results after his matches.

“I talk to Paul Fairclough and the chairman at Barnet. They always welcome me when I come back to watch a game.

“When I do go back the supporters chant my name and praise me. So that is really nice from the fans. It is a good family club.”

Adomah, who has been capped by Ghana since leaving the Bees, has many fond memories of playing at Underhill and says that taking on Arsenal in a pre-season friendly was a highlight.

But what was his favourite memory of playing at the Bees home of 106 years?

He said: “I would have to go with the final game of the season in 2010 against Rochdale. It was a game that we needed to win to make sure we stayed up and we scored in the last minute to win.”
