- A pressure group criticised 13 Barnet Council officers who had collected salaries in excess of £100,000. A study by the TaxPayers Alliance revealed the number of local authority employees with six-figure salaries. Only Westminster and Wandsworth had more high-earning officers than Barnet. Barnet Council refused to reveal who the employees were.
- ‘No more excuses’ was the message from Mayor Ken Livingstone, when he criticised Barnet Council’s failure to meet social housing targets. He said councils falling short could not use lack of cash as an excuse.
- A Hendon costumier, who had kitted out the cast of many Hollywood films, acquired the BBC’s clothing collection, which included more than a million outfits from a host of TV favourites.
- Shoppers threatened to boycott two supermarket giants that planned to open stores in New Barnet. Nearly 300 people packed into St James Church in East Barnet Road.
