If you pass the Quaker Meeting House in Leicester Road, New Barnet, you will see a poster which reads: ‘Why do we have foodbanks in a rich country?’. The answer is that the UK is one of the most unequal societies in the developed world. Quakers feel that we need to narrow this gap.
There are lots of things we can do to achieve a more equal society. We need a fairer, more progressive tax system, a higher minimum wage, and we need to ensure that people on low incomes aren’t forced to pay over the odds for basics like food, finance, fuel and funerals.
Please ask your election candidates what they think about this. More equal societies are better for everyone.
