A Keanu Marsh-Brown penalty helped ten-man Barnet claim a point and a 1-1 draw at Welling United.

Andy Yiadom was shown a debateable red card in the 25th minute and then Joe Healy put the home side ahead as his mis-hit cross looped into the net.

But Barnet battled back in the second period and a Marsh-Brown’s spot kick ensured the Bees left Park View with a deserved point.

It was a much changed Barnet side to the one which had beaten Salisbury City with Luke Gambin, Elliot Johnson, Mark Byrne and Luisma Villa out through injury.

The first half was full of chances. The Bees started strongly and new signing Kieran Cadogan sent an early shot just past the post.

Cadogan, who began behind Marciano Mengerink, linked play well and he passed out to Yiadom whose low strike deflected just wide. From the resultant corner, Jack Saville headed against the crossbar.

Welling hadn’t forced Graham Stack into a meaningful save but Edgar Davids’ overhit back pass almost beat the Bees goalkeeper. Fortunately for the visitors the ball trickled past the post.

The chances continued for Barnet. Mengerink had a header cleared off the line and Cadogan struck the crossbar from a corner.

The Bees seemed in control but on 25 minutes they were reduced to ten men as Yiadom dived into a challenge on Loick Pires.

It was a poor tackle and perhaps a yellow card would have sufficed but Amy Fearn didn’t hesitate and dismissed the right-back.

Barnet reshuffled but fell behind four minutes later. A crossfield pass found Healy and he sliced his cross. The ball looped into the air, over the helpless Stack and dropped into the net.

It was a fortuitous opener but Stack had to produce a fine save to tip a Kurtis Guthrie shot past the post and deny the hosts a second goal.

Despite their numerical disadvantage the Bees came close to equalising as Keanu Marsh-Brown fired a shot towards the top corner but Lee Butcher pushed the ball over the crossbar.

The final chance of the half went to the hosts as a cross to the back post was met by Guthrie and he headed narrowly over.

Welling had a great opportunity to extend their advantage after the restart as Alex Dyer broke into the penalty area but he smashed his shot wide from 12 yards.

The second period wasn’t as open as the first and the home side struggled to take advantage of the extra man.

David Stephens and Jack Saville were excellent in the visitors’ defence and kept Welling at bay for the majority of the game.

Down the other end, Barnet came close as Mauro Vilhete cut inside and fired an effort straight into the arms of Butcher.

Barnet’s performance deserved a reward and with 19 minutes to play, they won a penalty as Marsh-Brown was brought down in the area.

The winger elected to take the spot kick and smashed his effort into the corner and past Butcher.

The remainder of the game was even. The Bees defended well and threatened on the counter.

Neither team were able to create a clear opportunity to score a winner and the contest ended level.
