Barnet chairman Tony Kleanthous believes Edgar Davids’ departure from the Bees was “the right thing to do for him and us”.

Davids left his role as Barnet’s head coach on Saturday following a 2-1 defeat at Chester – a game which he did not attend.

Kleanthous admitted a change was needed but stressed the decision for the Dutchman to leave the club was a joint decision.

He said: “We are sitting tenth in the Conference and clearly what we were doing wasn’t working. So if it is not working you have got to make a change, it was the right thing do to for him and us.

“We both agreed it was the right thing. It wasn’t a case of who told who it was more just the realisation that it wasn’t working.”

Davids’ absence at Chester led to many supporters querying whether the former Holland international had left Barnet prior to the match but Kleanthous stated the decision was made after the defeat.

He said: “He just wasn’t there because he wasn’t there. It (Davids leaving) was decided after the game.”

During Davids’ time at the club, Barnet were relegated from the Football League and their promotion bid in the Skrill Premier has stuttered.

However, Kleanthous says he loved the Dutchman’s time with the Bees and believes he helped raise Barnet’s profile off the pitch.

He said: “Obviously I wasn’t happy about relegation and that was a very sad moment. But for the 15 months he was here, he gave us a bigger profile and helped and supported the club as best he could.

“Maybe ultimately his inexperienced was part of the problem but he goes with our best wishes and I am sure he will go on and further his career.

“But for us and him it was the right time to part company.”

Good luck to Edgar Davids! He did a great job at Barnet. Just look at his stats while he was in charge.
The fans who wanted him gone are deluded.
Best manager we've had in years.
Will be hard to replace him with anyone half as good.
