Wingate & Finchley’s poor form in the Ryman Premier continued on Tuesday night as they were beaten 2-0 by Hampton & Richmond Borough.

The Blues continue to struggle this season and the defeat drags them closer to the relegation zone.

Hampton’s top scorer Charlie Moone broke the deadlock as his stunning volley flew past Bobby Smith in the 17th minute.

Stuart Lake doubled the lead for the hosts on the half-an-hour mark as he rifled the ball home on the end of a half-cleared corner at the far post.

Adam Bolle hit the bar with Wingate’s best chance, as he tried to place a header from an Ola Williams cross.

Wingate improved in the second period but were unable to find a way through the solid Hampton backline.

It was the Blues’ second defeat in four days after they lost 1-0 to Leiston on Saturday as Joe Francis’ strike proved enough to seal victory.

Wingate striker Leon Smith has left the club by mutual consent and has joined near neighbours Hendon, who completed a 1-0 win against Billericay Town on Tuesday thanks to a goal from Adam Wallace.

Wingate’s director of football David Norman said Smith had been a “fantastic servant” for the Blues and added: “I am immensely proud of him and what he has achieved here at Wingate – just five years ago Leon was playing Sunday league football and he has proven he can be a prolific goalscorer at this level.

“On Sunday I had a long conversation with him and we both felt that a fresh challenge would be in both the club’s interest and his.”
