Hendon battled to a 2-0 win at AFC Hornchurch in the Ryman Premier Division on Tuesday night.

Leon Smith fired the visitors into the lead before Casey Maclaren sealed the points which took them third in the table.

Hendon are through to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup after thrashing Leiston 4-1 on Saturday.

Their reward is a trip to Dorchester Town on October 11 in the next round of the competition.

Saturday’s match got off to a spectacular start after 40 seconds when Smith held off a defender and fired a shot into the net.

The hosts continued to dominate and were rewarded with a second goal just before the break when Andre Da Costa neatly curled a shot in off the post.

The Greens effectively clinched victory when they added a third in the second half after Dave Diedhiou managed to guide the ball past the keeper.

Leiston netted a consolation through Tom Bullard’s header.

But Hendon rounded off the victory late on when Kezie Ibe managed to round the keeper and fire into the empty net.

Manager Gary McCann said: “This was a game of real importance to the football club and the players produced plenty of purpose and pace and they are expressing themselves in the dangerous areas of the pitch.

“It is important for the management team to give the players freedom to express themselves. The balance of each individual and collective display was top class.”

The Hendon boss continued: “We are in a very good place at the moment. We have suffered more than our fair share of injuries and we have still put in some very fine performances.”

Hendon will look to maintain their winning run this weekend when they host Lewes, who are third bottom of the table.
