Martin Allen says he doesn’t know what formation Barnet used in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Dagenham & Redbridge at The Hive but admits it could be employed again in the future.

The Bees set out in what appeared to be a 4-3-3 system with Aaron McLean and John Akinde flanking Michael Gash as the central striker in a three-pronged attack.

It was much the same set-up as Allen had switched to in victory over Stevenage a week earlier when chasing the game at 2-1.

On that occasion his decision paid dividends as the Bees came from behind to win 3-2 and again on Saturday he was rewarded for his invention with a comfortable win over a poor Dagenham side.

Asked afterwards what had prompted the change from 4-4-2, Allen said: “I didn’t really view it as that (4-3-3). I just put a team out there.

“Aaron McLean played out on the right, Luke Gambin played on the left, John Akinde played up front, Michael Gash played just behind him and there were two holding midfield players.

“You could say it was 4-2-3-1. Or if you are a real boff, you could say it was 4-5-1. I don’t know what it was.”

He continued: “I just said: ‘McLean, you play over there, Gambin you play over there and when we are in their half, Gash, you push up next to Akinde and when it’s in our half you have got to come back and help.

“I suppose it is a bit of a flexible system. The players seem to have taken to it and enjoy it. We are creating chance, making good opportunities to score goals and the players are now getting their rewards for their hard work and continued efforts.”

“Of course, it has got to be considered [in the future],” he said when asked.
