Three Barnet goals in a stunning five-minute blitz saw the Bees pick up their first away win of the season and take the unbeaten home record of Oxford United 3-2 in an enthralling encounter.

What's more, it was also the Bees’ first away win in the Football League since a 1-0 triumph at AFC Wimbledon on April 1, 2013.

The points, secured on the back of Barnet’s first away point of the season at Hartlepool United on Tuesday, were richly deserved and came as goals from Curtis Weston, John Akinde and Josh Clarke cancelled out Liam Sercombe’s 14th-minute opener.

Sercombe set up a tense finish to an entertaining first half by adding a second before the break but Martin Allen’s men weathered a literal and metaphorical storm after the break to hang out for a fine away victory.

Allen made two changes from the side which drew at Hartlepool on Tuesday, bringing Weston and Sam Muggleton – making his first league start of the season – into the side in place of Michael Gash and Sam Togwell.

And it was Muggleton who created Barnet’s first chance from a trademark long throw, lobbing the ball into the penalty area where Oxford keeper Sam Slocombe could only paw the ball unconvincing into the path of Weston to slam wide.

A minute later Akinde was booked after poking the ball past Slocombe before going to ground and claiming contact from the keeper outside his penalty area. But referee Darren Handley saw differently and booked the striker for simulation.

But Barnet’s bright start was soon forgotten when they fell behind after 14 minutes.

The ball was worked in from the right-hand flank following a short corner and Sercombe – who got the winner against Plymouth Argyle in a top-of-the-table clash on Tuesday – arrived to lash home first time from the centre of the penalty area before Akinde could clear.

Barnet had a good penalty appeal turned away eight minutes later when Andy Yiadom latched onto Akinde’s clever lay-off only to be felled by a sliding challenge from John Lundstram. The referee, again, saw differently to the Bees midfielder and waved away the appeals.

That was forgotten just three minutes later, though, as Allen’s side pulled level, kicking off a breathless five-minute spell.

Elliott Johnson swept in an inviting free-kick in from the Barnet half and Akinde knocked down for Weston to shoot across Slocombe and into the far corner from the edge of the six-yard box.

Things got better for the Bees just three minutes later when U’s skipper Jake Wright miscued a routine clearance allowing Akinde to tuck beyond Slocombe at the near post with ease, his third in as many games since being dropped.

Akinde was then at the centre of the move which saw Barnet take a shock 3-1 lead just two minutes later, releasing Clarke on the right to pick his spot and fire his second in three matches low beyond Slocombe.

Oxford felt they ought to have had a penalty just after the half-hour mark when Johnson was accused of barging Jordan Graham to the floor.

The winger, who has just returned from a one-match man, then sought retribution by scything the Bees defender to the floor out on the touchline, earning a booking for his troubles.

Four minutes before the break Michael Appleton’s side halved the deficit, Sercombe latching onto a loose ball before taking a touch to round Bira Dembele and slot past the unprotected Stephens with ease.

The former Exeter City midfielder looked to have dragged the shell-shocked U’s level seconds before the half-time whistle, too, but instead screwed a half-volley against the inside of Stephens’ post after the ball fell to him at the back post.

Allen introduced Gash in place of Gavin Hoyte at the break, meaning Clarke reverted to right-back and Yiadom to the right-hand side of midfield in an attempt to go in search of more goals.

The second half continued at the same relentless pace as the first and Oxford passed up another gilt-edged chance to equalise when Alex MacDonald ran through and forced a fine stop from Stephens, the goalkeeper recovering superbly to hold onto Kemar Roofe’s follow-up with the goal gaping.

But the second period did not provide the same number of chances as the first with Barnet’s defence proving less porous.

Roofe should have done better when substitute Callum O’Dowda picked him out inside the penalty area only to curl over.

The hosts went closer still seconds later when O’Dowda prodded the ball underneath Stephens from the left but N’Gala was on hand to clear off the line.

Chances continued to come, though, Roofe wriggling into enough space to force an excellent stop from Stephens as the board went up to indicate five minutes of injury time.

Those minutes passed by in a blur and Barnet held on to claim their first three points on the road this season.
