Wingate set up a potential local derby with Wealdstone in the FA Trophy first round after a 1-0 win at Metropolitan Police on Saturday.

Sean Cronin's second-half penalty was enough to plot the Blues' progress through the third and final qualifying stage.

Keith Rowland's men started well and could have led when Afolabi Obafemi crossed for Marc Charles-Smith early on, but his connection was wayward.

Rob Laney and Luke Ifil both tried their luck before the break while Met Police did not cause any nerves until five minutes before half-time, when Tom Bird forced a diving save from Shane Gore.

After the break it was more of the same, with Charles-Smith heading Nathan Mavila's cross onto the bar.

Wingate were given a perfect opportunity to put their profligacy behind them when Laney was brought down with 64 minutes gone, and from the spot Cronin tucked the ball into the corner.

A flurry of late chances from the hosts briefly threatened to force a replay but the Blues survived unscathed to head through to the first round proper.
