Barnet caretaker manager Ian Hendon has wasted no time in stamping his mark on the squad he inherited from ex-boss Paul Fairclough.

Hendon, when moving up to the hot seat a few weeks ago, insisted he had his own ideas, and would do some things differently to his predecessor.

And he has been as good as his word.

Not only has he brought in the likes of Paul Furlong and Tommy Black, Hendon has also changed the team captain.

Frenchman Kenny Gillet has been handed the armband — even though he is still getting to grips with the English language.

One of Fairclough’s last major moves was to make midfielder Neal Bishop captain, but Hendon is sure Gillet is the best man for the job.

Hendon, who gained the first point of his reign following the 1-1 draw with Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday, said: “Kenny was initially worried about the language problem, but there is no need to, as it can be about body language.

“The way he trains says everything. He’s a winner and I know what I am going to get from him.”

And he insisted a lot of his youngsters could also look to the experienced Furlong for inspiration. The striker is still going strong at 40.

“He is the first one and the last one out when it comes to training,” Hendon pointed out.

Furlong is on loan from Southend United, but Hendon said he would like to extend the deal. Defender Abu Ogogo, though currently sidelined through injury, is having his loan period from Arsenal extended until the end of the season, while Michael Townsend could also return.

Hendon has also not ruled out other new arrivals before the transfer window closes at the end of this month.

“If I can strengthen the team, then I will do so,” he said.

Barnet travel to fellow strugglers Accrington Stanley this Saturday.

Hendon said: “These are the sort of games we have got to get something from. We will be going up there to win.”

However, the Bees could face the trip without most of their defence. Jeremy De Magalhaes is already sidelined, while Gary Breen, who missed the game against Dagenham & Redbridge, has a groin problem. Ismail Yakubu also hobbled off on Saturday with a hamstring injury. Midfielder-turned-defender Michael Leary also misses the match after receiving a red card in Saturday’s London derby.
