Veteran striker Paul Furlong hit his third and fourth goal in three games to move Barnet ten points clear of the drop zone.

The 40-year-old struck twice in the final 20 minutes and was the undoubted highlight of a rather disappointing game.

These two sides produced seven goals between them in the corresponding fixture, but this match never lived up to expectations. Without Furlong's late show, this would have been a highly forgetable encounter.

Not that the Bees will care, the three points moving them a giant step towards League Two safety.

Barnet were forced to make one change from the side that beat Gillingham on Saturday. With Matt Lockwood returning to Colchester United this week, Kenny Gillet slotted into the left-back position.

There was plenty of hustle and bustle in the opening exchanges, but very little in the way of clear-cut chances.

The Bees' first chance came on 20 minutes, John O'Flynn forcing keeper Andy Warrington to claw his header out from under his own bar following an Albert Adomah cross.

There was a massive blow for the hosts just a couple of minutes later, when top scorer O'Flynn hobbled off injured.

The Millers often got into good positions, but were let down by some rather tame finishing.

Though the Bees enjoyed most of the possession in what was a dull first half, they never really looked like breaking the deadlock, O'Flynn's header their only real effort on goal.

Confusion between Gillet and keeper Jake Cole almost let Drewe Broughton in at the start of the second period, while Barnet should have scored at the other end, an Adomah cross finding Paul Furlong six yards out, but the striker failed to get a good connection to the ball with his head.

At least the game was starting to liven up a little, though both sides continued to struggle to stamp their authority on proceedings.

Midway through the half, Cole did well to punch out a Broughton drive after the ball had been laid invitingly into his path.

Adomah then forced Warrington to push out a far-post volley, the Barnet winger teeing the ball up himself.

The goal finally came 20 minutes from time and it was worth waiting for. Furlong received the ball with his back to goal, but turned his marker brilliantly and slotted past Warrington. It was a lovely piece of skill and quality finish.

And Furlong then did it again on 81 minutes, diving to meet a Joe Devera cross, his header looping over Warrington for the second.

Suddenly the hosts were rampant and Adomah saw Warrington push over a drive after being freed down the right, as Barnet finished the game in full control.
