Barnet boss Mark Robson admits his side’s 3-0 defeat against Port Vale was a “disappointing” way to begin their League Two campaign.

The Bees struggled to create chances throughout a difficult contest and Vale took all three points thanks to goals from Louis Dodds, Jennison Myrie-Williams and Tom Pope.

Although Barnet improved after the interval they didn’t ever have a clear opportunity to get back into the contest.

Reflecting on the defeat Robson said: “It was very disappointing. It was a tough game against a strong side. I’m disappointed with conceding three goals as well.

“Certainly losing two goals early on was a big blow to us. I’m not sure if it was or wasn’t a penalty but that didn’t help.

“All in all I can’t complain about the result.”

He continued: “I think what was most disappointing for us was that we didn’t have a cutting edge. We didn’t create hardly any chances really. “We had one in the first half from Jon Nurse through what was probably our best piece of football al game.

“So I’m disappointed that we didn’t really create more chances but that is something we need to look at and work on.”

In their midweek Capital One cup clash against Birmingham City the Bees impressed with their passing football.

However, Vale didn’t allow the young Barnet side time on the ball and they struggled to keep possession, especially in the first half.

Robson acknowledges his side will have to improve but believed the match would be a good learning curve for his team.

He said: “I said in the dressing room that if we want to play passing football, we need to be better on the ball.

“Port Vale were, strong, aggressive, turned us around and made it very difficult for us. I was impressed with them.

“It is a good learning curve for a young team and they need to adapt to this quickly.

“But I’m sure they will. They are a good bunch of lads and they put the effort in but we weren’t at the races.”
