Barnet boss Martin Allen felt his side’s 3-1 win over Macclesfield Town this afternoon was their best performance of the season.
Second-half goals from Andy Yiadom, John Akinde and Curtis Weston saw the Bees come from behind to beat the in-form Silkmen at The Hive and extend their lead at the top of the Conference to eight points.
After Tuesday’s last-gasp defeat at Bristol Rovers and the draw at Woking a week ago, this was Barnet’s third game in seven days and Allen was delighted with the effort of his side.
He enthused: “It was not easy for our players but it takes a lot of character and guts. They practice it and train to do it.
“Who is that golfer? Gary Player, who said: ‘The harder I practice, the luckier I seem to get’. I have just said to the players that performance in the second half, to win after being a goal down, was probably the best performance of the whole season.”
Allen continued: “Taking into account the character, going 1-0 down just before half time, losing in the last minute the other night, having two hard away games in a week and for the third time in a week to bounce back like that, I thought overall [it was our best performance of the season].
“It’s all right winning 5-0 away from home on a perfect pitch on the opening game of the season, but coming here today and doing this with a bit of pressure on was all-important.”
After a sluggish opening 45 minutes at Bristol Rovers in midweek, the Bees were back to their best in the first half against the Silkmen, but fell behind to Adriano Moke’s 41st-minute strike.
“The first half today was a real test,” admitted Allen. “To concede just before half time, the players can go two ways. They could turn their backs and think: ‘Oh my God, this is going to be a tricky afternoon’, or they made a decision themselves at half time they would keep playing and keep doing what they been doing and believe in themselves.
“Thankfully it was a great result on what was a very emotional day for the crowd and me. It was a special day and I’m sure Gaz (Gareth Needham) would be very proud of his team today,” he added.
Allen was also able to confirm centre-back David Stephens only started on the bench after complaining of a sore foot on Saturday, whilst revealing winger Keanu Marsh-Brown would return to training on Monday.
