New details have emerged from a witness who saw a woman in her 90s has died hit by a car in East Finchley.

Lyttelton Road, East Finchley, was the site of a collision between a car and a pedestrian around 10.54am on Saturday (February 25).

The pedestrian, a woman in her 90s, was taken by ambulance to a central London hospital and pronounced dead just before 1pm.

A witness, who asked not to be named, witnessed the event along with her partner and said they made efforts to care for the victim shortly after she was struck by the car.

She described the victim as “frail and shivering” and said her partner – who works for the fire brigade – tried to keep her warm and supported before the ambulance came.

Despite his apparent efforts to look after the victim, the witness said her partner “knew she was too weak to survive to the hospital”.

According to the witness, the driver was “a man who looked in his 60s” and was very shaken by the event.

Police confirmed the driver remained at the scene for questioning and was not arrested.

The witness also mentioned a woman who was also a bystander to the collision who reacted “hysterically” and could not be calmed – she believed the woman may have useful details for police.

Formal identification of the deceased is yet to take place and a post-mortem will take place in due course.
