BREAKS in the Premier League campaign for international football are usually welcomed by most at Spurs.

One of the reasons is that it gives defender Ledley King the chance to recuperate.

And, after withdrawing from the England squad this week after his surprise and ‘ridiculous’ call-up (in the words of boss Harry Redknapp), the defender will at least now get the chance to put his feet up.

Despite his well-publicised injury problems, and the fact he can only manage one game per week and very little training, King has been in fine form, as has fellow centre-back Jonathan Woodgate, the duo playing a big part in Tottenham’s revival.

They both combined to shut out Chelsea’s superstars at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

Of course, King and Woodgate are not the only Tottenham players to be in a rich vein of form.

And some will feel the international break has come at the wrong time. Spurs appear capable of beating anyone at the moment and might wish the season could go on for a little bit longer.

Luka Modric grabbed the winner in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Chelsea, putting in another superb display.

And even keeper Heurelho Gomes is enjoying his football at the moment, something few could have imagined possible a couple of months back.

But the Brazilian is now starting to show the Premier League why he came to England with such a fine reputation.

Redknapp admitted: “I was worried about him, but now he’s playing terrifically well.”

The manager will just be hoping his international stars return to White Hart Lane from international duty unscathed and still in good form, and that the break will not affect the momentum built up in recent weeks.

At least he knows the revitalised and much-needed King will be ready and raring to go.

Tottenham return to Premier League action on April 4, when they make the trip to relegation-threatened Blackburn Rovers.
