Spurs 0 Portsmouth 2 (AET)

FA Cup semi-final (at Wembley Stadium)

It was heartbreak for Spurs at Wembley this afternoon.

Two extra-time Pompey goals means Harry Redknapp's side will not be returning to the national stadium for the final next month.

Instead, his former charges will now face Chelsea on May 15.

Tottenham dominated most of the game, but Portsmouth defended superbly and the Lilywhites could not break them down.

It was just one of those days for Spurs and you could not criticise them for lack of effort.

But for Pompey, relegated from the Premier League yesterday, this was a fairy-tale finish to a turbulent season.

Tottenham started the better and had the first shot, but Tom Huddlestone was way over from distance.

Jermain Defoe almost got on the end of a David Bentley corner that had been flicked on by Vedran Corluka, the ball being cleared as he was about to strike from just a few yards out.

From another Bentley corner, Peter Crouch saw a header saved by David James at his near post, the Lilywhites in full control in the opening stages.

On the break, Fredrique Piquionne showed his pace on a couple of occasions, but Spurs continued to ask most of the questions, without really threatening.

Midway through the first half, Luka Modric was just over with a dipping half-volley from the angle of the box, the ball landing on the roof of the net.

Pompey were just starting to come into the game at this point and Kevin Prince Boateng was just wide with a curling free-kick, though the diving Gomes looked to have had it covered.

Meanwhile, Spurs continued to push forward and Crouch saw James save another header, this time from a Huddlestone cross.

However, the best chance of the half fell to Portsmouth ten minutes before the break. Piquionne beat the offside trap and only had Gomes to beat, but the keeper blocked his shot.

Huddlestone then forced James into the save of the half, the Pompey keeper pushing out his 20-yard drive that appeared to be heading for the top corner.

Tottenham had a good chance to strike at the start of the second half, but Defoe saw his close-range shot blocked, before Gomes had to push away a dangerous Boateng outswinging free-kick at the other end.

Piquionne might have done better with a header after Aruna Dindane's cross cleared Michael Dawson, but his effort was straight at Gomes.

Defoe then shot straight at James, as the game started to open up a little.

Things certainly opened up nicely for Corluka on the hour, but, from a central position, his finish did not match his fine approach play.

Sub Roman Pavlyuchenko then made room for himself, only to see his long-range drive flash well wide.

Midway through the half, Crouch headed a Bentley corner wide, with James getting nowhere near to the cross.

The game remained in the balance, with both sides just lacking a bit of craft and guile in the final third of the pitch.

With 15 minutes to go, Crouch hit the side netting with a header from a deep Gareth Bale cross. Some fans in the stadium thought it had gone in at first.

The final chance of the 90 minutes came in stoppage time, James somehow keeping out a Crouch flick at the near post after good work from Bale.

The deadlock was finally broken ten minutes into extra time. Dawson slipped at the crucial moment and Piquionne latched on to a knockdown into the box, shooting under Gomes from eight yards.

Crouch almost responded immediately at the other end, clipping the post with one effort and then seeing a goal ruled out, Niko Kranjcar deemed to have fouled the keeper before his team-mate had hooked home the ball.

Tottenham threw everyone forward in the closing stages, but were caught on the break, Dindane racing through before being tripped by Wilson Palacios.

Boateng found the corner with his penalty to end Tottenham's FA Cup dream for another year.
